Instead of his own compositions, the British cult indie rocker and former lead singer of the Smiths covers songs by great idols such as Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs and Roy Orbison, Joni Mitchell and Carly Simon. "California Son" features a total of twelve tracks. As with the previous album, production was handled by producer Joe Chiccarelli. The singer provided the first taste of "California Son" with his new interpretation of Roy Orbison's "It's Over".
