Joy Division nahráli dvě alba, než si zpěvák Ian Curtis, sužovaný epilepsií a osobními problémy, v roce 1980 tragicky vzal život. The album was produced by Martin Hannett and recorded at Strawberry Studios in Stockport, England. Critics have called Closer "an absolute masterpiece" and it is considered one of the best albums of all time. The album's title comes from the final verse of the first song, "Atrocity Exhibition". The album cover features a black and white photograph of the band taken by Anton Corbijn. The album Closer was well received by critics and was a commercial success, reaching number six in the UK Albums Chart. The album was awarded a gold certificate by the British Phonographic Industry. The album's first track, "Atrocity Exhibition", was released as a single in September 1980 and reached number 25 in the UK Singles Chart.
