In 1984, The Smiths released a compilation that secured the band's second Top 10 album in the UK and gave American fans an item to show other Anglophiles as proof of their admiration for Messrs Morrissey and Marr. (It seems like a long time ago, but there really was a time when the words "it's an import" caused outrage among the truly music-obsessed.) After the band's 1984 debut album, which climbed to second-to-last place in the UK album chart, Hatful of Hollow was a temporary measure Morrissey suggested to get as many people as possible to hear their new single, "How Soon Is Now?" However, by happy coincidence, it also ensured that The Smiths were in the public eye while the quartet were working on their second studio album, and better still - it was commercially successful. It may not be as much as their debut, but 7th place is still a great chart position. It also allowed the band to officially release versions of some of The Smiths' songs that they felt were better suited to the material, so it was a commercial and creative success. Admittedly, the arrangement of the songs on Hatful of Hollow is somewhat arbitrary: singles, B-sides and songs from sessions with John Peel and David Jensen are mixed together without any particular reason for their placement. But this seeming indifference to organization or a particular musical movement is also one of the charms of this collection, so it would be pointless to dwell on it. In terms of content, you can't go wrong with any Smiths compilation that includes "How Soon Is Now?", but of the tracks that didn't appear on any of the band's studio albums, we were always most taken with "Handsome Devil", which contains several of Morrissey's outrageously lascivious couplets: "Let me get my hands / On your mammary glands / And let me get your head / In a conjugal bed". Hatful of Hollow is the second album by English rock band The Smiths, released in November 1984. The album was recorded at London's Matrix Studios in July 1984 with producer John Porter. It was the first album the band released on Rough Trade Records after leaving their previous independent label, WEA. The album charted at number 14 in the UK Albums Chart.
