Alt-J, often stylized as ∆, is an English indie rock band formed in 2007 in Leeds, by Gwil Sainsbury (guitar/bass), Joe Newman (guitar/lead vocals), Thom Sonny Green (drums), and Gus Unger-Hamilton (keyboards/vocals). The band's name is derived from the delta symbol (∆) which can be typed on an Apple Mac keyboard with the keystroke "alt-J". Their debut album "An Awesome Wave" was released in 2012 and quickly became a critical and commercial success. It won the prestigious Mercury Prize for best album in the UK and Ireland. They followed up with their second album "This Is All Yours" in 2014, which debuted at number one in the UK and earned them a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album. Their music is known for its unique blend of layered, folk-inflected dub-pop, intricate melodies, and Joe Newman's distinctive vocal style. Over the years, alt-J has developed a strong fan base and has been recognized for their innovative approach to indie music.
