In 2018, Yo-Yo Ma embarked on a two-year journey during which he performed six suites for solo cello by Johann Sebastian Bach in 36 locations on six continents. The multiple Grammy Award-winning and internationally acclaimed cellist performed cello suites at the stunning Odeon of Herod Atticus in Athens. Yo-Yo Ma on the suites: "These suites are so significant. They are not only companions and friends, but also reference points in my life." Yo-Yo Ma first encountered Bach and his cello suites when he was four years old and, under the guidance of his father, learned the first bar of the Prelude from Suite No. 1. These works became a permanent part of his life. His first complete recording of the suites, which won a Grammy Award, was made when Mao was only 30 years old. The second recording, Inspired by Bach, was released when the cellist was just 40 years old. Yo-Yo Ma's earlier recordings of cello suites were milestones among all classical music recordings and in his career. With "Six Evolutions," a new chapter begins in the 58-year-old cellist's relationship with these works. His third interpretation of Bach's Cello Suites reveals the maturity and experience of a master performer in every bar. "Bach's cello suites have always been my musical companions," Ma says of them. "For nearly six decades they have strengthened, comforted and brought me joy in tense moments when there was much to celebrate or when I needed consolation. What power this music has - even today, 300 years after it was written, it is our support in difficult times."

V roce 2018 se Yo-Yo Ma vydal na dvouletou cestu, během níž na 36 místech na šesti kontinentech vždy na jeden večer provedl šest suit pro sólové violoncello Johanna Sebastiana Bacha. Pro Yo-Yo Ma je Bachova 300 let stará hudba mimořádným příkladem toho, jak nás kultura může spojovat a pomáhat nám představovat si a budovat lepší budoucnost. Nezapomenutelným zážitkem bylo vystoupení několikanásobného držitele ceny Grammy a mezinárodně uznávaného violoncellisty, který provedl Suity pro violoncello v ohromujícím Odeonu Heroda Attika v Athénách.

Yo-Yo Ma se poprvé setkal s Bachem a jeho violoncellovými suitami, když mu byly čtyři roky a pod vedením svého otce se naučil první takt Preludia k Suitě č. 1. V roce 2005 se stal členem orchestru a v roce 2006 se stal členem orchestru. Tato díla se stala stálicí v jeho životě. První kompletní nahrávka suit, která získala cenu Grammy, vznikla, když bylo Maovi téměř 30 let. Jeho druhá nahrávka "Inspired by Bach" vyšla, když cellistovi bylo právě 40 let. S "Six Evolutions" začíná nová kapitola ve vztahu 58letého violoncellisty k těmto dílům. Jeho třetí průzkum Bachových violoncellových suit odhaluje zralost a zkušenost mistra interpreta v každém taktu. "Bachovy violoncellové suity byly vždy mými hudebními společníky," říká Ma o těchto dílech. "Po téměř šest desetiletí mě posilovaly, utěšovaly a přinášely mi radost ve vypjatých chvílích, když bylo co slavit nebo jsem potřeboval útěchu. Jakou sílu tato hudba má - i dnes, 300 let po jejím napsání, je stále zdrojem opory v těžkých chvílích."
