V roce 1996 uspořádalo londýnské vydavatelství World Circuit nahrávání v Havaně na Kubě. Během tří týdnů vyšla tři alba, z nichž třetí, "Buena Vista Social Club", se stalo celosvětovým hitem, kterého se do dnešního dne prodalo sedm milionů kopií. Dosud nejprodávanější album world music inspirovalo mimo jiné Wima Wenderse k natočení úspěšného filmu o kubánských hudebních legendách.

Poté, co v říjnu loňského roku vyšlo album poprvé na vinylu, je nyní k dispozici také jako nový nosič v pevné vazbě ve formátu CD s 48stránkovým bookletem. V současné době se také natáčí nový film Wima Wenderse.
