The album was recorded at Powertrax Studios in Hollywood, California, produced by David Kershenbaum over eight weeks in late 1987. The album contains 11 tracks and was hailed by most music critics almost immediately upon its release as a return to simplicity in the purest folk tradition. Following the worldwide broadcast of a 70th birthday tribute to Nelson Mandela, it was a huge commercial success in many countries including the UK, France and Germany. It reached number one on the US Billboard 200 chart and was certified six times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), selling more than six million copies in the US alone. Three singles have been released from the album: Talkin' Bout A Revolution Fast Car and Baby Can I Hold You.
