Forty-seven years ago, The Doors released their fourth album, which departed somewhat from the sound of their previous albums and used arrangements with horns and strings. "It was meant to be a sonic extravaganza," Ray Manzarek wrote in his autobiography Light My Fire: My Life with The Doors, "with horns and strings complementing our basic guitar, keyboard and percussion sound. We wanted to bring in jazz players, country and western players, and classical players. Like most of the band's catalog, The Soft Parade was produced by Paul A. Rothchild, but Manzarek took the opportunity to contribute himself. "I had a hell of a time producing the album," Manzarek wrote. "I especially enjoyed working with Paul Harris on the arrangements of the songs, which were meant to be sonically varied, full of horns and strings." Although the album didn't go down in history as the easiest to record (Manzarek described it as "taking an incredibly long time to complete"), it was commercially successful: it put the Doors in the Top 10 - reaching No. 6. The band scored another Top 5 single with "Touch Me", while three other songs ("Wishful Sinful", "Tell All the People" and "Runnin' Blue") all climbed into the Hot 100.Review "This is probably the Doors' most underrated album, as the addition of horns and strings ("Wishful Sinful") makes it more experimental than their simpler music usually attempts. But it's on "Tell All the People" that the band is at its most revolutionary, and the long title track is one of its most ambitious." (All Music Guide)
