Does a political album have to have deep lyrics and protest songs? It doesn't have to! Godspeed You! Black Emperor are an instrumental, yet political band through and through. It begins with an internal, contentious songwriting process and ends with a refusal to accept the pop industry. Every fan knows this and loves the multi-headed Canadians for their consistent stance. Yanqui U. X.O. is the title of their latest masterpiece (their next one), and the album title and song and cover design are full of obvious allusions. Yanqui is the name of the 1846-47 war with the US. It was the first war fought by Americans, for whom the conflict is simply called the "Mexican War", on foreign soil. U.X.O. is a term for "unexploded ordnance" but also means landmines or fragmentation bombs. The misery that lies behind these three letters probably needs no further explanation - more so, perhaps, the two-part, epic opening piece "09-15-00". Only numbers, like "9-11" (in English, the month comes first, then the day), and yet they have great significance. "09-15-00" commemorates the day Ariel Sharon marched with a thousand soldiers to the Islamic holy site of Al-Haram ash-Sharif and provoked a new intifada. No one should see an anti-Israel stance behind this; it is about context and impact. Somewhere Godspeed, who moved the "!" after "you", wrote: "GY!BE is complicit is the culprit is the opponent". So they are prisoners of a system to which they are holding a mirror and in which they have to live. The nine-piece band from Montreal, however, does not shout their anger, but transforms it into sound. They are epically powerful and incredibly dynamic, alternating between melancholy, despair and (helpless) rage. Implosions are followed by explosions, and phases of calm are followed by huge walls of sound that collapse again. Godspeed is careful with innovation. This time there are no tape recordings.
