Product information Detroit gave the world soul music thanks to the success of Motown Records, which has been collecting hits since 1959. Their latest sound has been studied and emulated by hundreds of bands across the city. Our "Birth Of Soul - Detroit Special Edition" has many Motown connections, including a previously unheard early Martha & the Vandellas track from their Del-Phis years - one of the songs co-written with Berry Gordy by his first wife Thelma. Influential songwriter, producer and early Motown artist Richard "Popcorn" Wylie co-wrote two tracks and Funk Brother Joe Hunter co-wrote the other two. Detroit soul heroes J.J. Barnes with "Just One More Time," Gino Washington with "I'm Comin' Home" and Melvin Davis with "Wedding Bells" represent the city's evergreen stars who sang here during the soul years. More successful was Barbara Lewis, whose famous "Think A Little Sugar" appeared on the flip of the hit "Hello Stranger." Timmy Shaw's "I'm A Lonely Guy" also sold well as a flip of his hit "Gonna Send You Back To Georgia." The Falcons and Volumes were the big male vocal groups in town, the Pyramids less so. Like Melvin Davis, Betty Lavett was at their birth and still performs today. The Donays' "Devil In His Heart" gained international fame when the Beatles included it on their second LP. Produced by the Correc-Tone stable, it also provides brilliant early soul from Marva Josie and Laura Johnson. The vast majority of the tracks on the CD are new, some of them new to the world.
