Ve svých začátcích sklízela skupina úspěch s pohodovým country boogie, zejména v motorkářské komunitě, než ji producent Ted Templeman v roce 1972 navedl na cestu k úspěchu s druhým albem "Toulouse Street". "Listen To The Music" byl velký hit, který je s Doobies spojován dodnes, a vytvořil jejich hudební značku: chytlavé rytmy, úderný refrén a křišťálově čistý (harmonický) zpěv, který dokonce vyvolal srovnání s Eagles. Následující alba "The Captain And Me" a "What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits" už byla jistými kandidáty na americkou Top 10 a "Black Water" se stala prvním číslem 1 skupiny Doobie Brothers. Pro "Stampede" se v roce 1975 ke kapele připojil ze Steely Dan výjimečný kytarista Jeff 'Skunk' Baxter, ale pro hudební profil bylo rozhodující spíše následující rozšíření vokálního oddělení: Michael McDonald výborně debutoval na "Takin' It To The Streets" titulní skladbou nebo "It Keeps You Runnin'" a i po konci Doobie v roce 1982 zaznamenal sólové úspěchy, jako například "Ya Mo Be There".
