The Shape of Punk to Come "stírá hranice mezi punkem, metalem a hardcorem, přičemž tuto brutální fúzi opepřuje techno bicími, jazzovými změnami rytmu a dlouhými, komplexními strukturami písní, které podporují politicky nabité poselství" (CMJ, 1998).

Kritikou nejoceňovanější a poslední album Refused explodovalo na scéně ohromující hardcorovou hymnou "New Noise", kterou kytarista Rage Against the Machine Tom Morello kdysi označil za "jeden z nejlepších rockových jamů všech dob" (Filter, 2006) a pomohlo navždy změnit hru a ovlivnit řadu žánrů dodnes.
