Punk in a Motown coat What a surprise: at the end of September, Idles announced a new studio album to be released later this year: 'Crawler' will be released on 12 November 2021, the fourth album from the British post-punk band, the follow-up to 2020's 'Ultra Mono'. There are 14 new tracks on the record, which was recorded at Real World Studios in Bath during the Corona Pandemic project by a band consisting of Joe Talbot (vocals), Jon Beavis (drums), Mark Bowen (solo guitar), Lee Kiernan (rhythm guitar) and Adam Devonshire (bass). 'Crawler' features contributions from Kenny Beats (Vince Staples, Slowthai, Freddie Gibbs), who worked on the previous album, and Idles guitarist Mark Bowen. With the single "The Beachland Ballroom", the Idles introduced the very first song, an unusually soulful number named after the Ohio club of the same name. Singer Joe Talbot says of the song, "It's really the most important song on the album. There are so many bands that go through small venues and dream of getting into big venues. When I was able to write a soul song like that, I was like, damn, we're at a point where we can go into these big venues and be creative and not just do the things we do, but really appreciate what we have. The song is kind of an allegory for feeling lost and overcoming that. I really enjoy singing it." Guitarist Mark Bowen continued, "I didn't know Joe could sing like that. From the beginning he tried to write 'Be My Baby' [a song by The Ronettes], but he didn't want to be the punk who put on the Motown coat. He wanted it to feel natural, like the song." The Idles formed in Bristol in 2009. Their debut album 'Brutalism' was released in 2017 to critical acclaim, as was their second album 'Joy As An Act Of Resistance' in 2018. Their third album "Ultra Mono" was released in September 2020 and reached number one in the UK charts.
