The first single from the album, "Rats", was released on February 16, 2018. The second single, "Dance Macabre", was released on October 26, 2018. The album's title track, "Prequelle", was released on May 4, 2018. The song is about the Black Death that swept through Europe in the 14th century. "Prequelle" is Latin for "prelude". The album cover was created by Swedish artist Zbigniew M. Bielak. It features a medieval knight on horseback holding a skull. The album was received positively by critics. On the server Metacritic, it received 79 points out of 100 on the basis of 9 reviews. Thom Jurek of AllMusic gave the album 4 stars out of 5 and wrote that "the band is going full speed ahead, delivering their most musically and lyrically diverse set of songs yet". He added that
