Falco invented German rap. In 1985 he even hit the American charts with the song "Rock Me Amadeus" and his singing in Manhattan-Schönbrunn German, a mixture of English and Viennese. Long before rapping became popular in this country, his provocative style, penchant for hard drugs and excessive partying, and boycott by the mainstream heralded the reputation of a generation of German rappers. In 1998 Falco raced and died with alcohol, cocaine and marijuana in his blood. Twenty years later, Falco's first collaborative album, "Sterben um zu Leben", was released, marking the first time he met his current bandmates. Sterben um zu Leben" features the top artists of the contemporary German rap scene who are often ignored and boycotted by the major media - even though they speak the language of the young and have dominated the German music market for years. Kontra K, Sido, Sun Diego, Ali As and co. have not only re-recorded Falco's songs, but have brought them into the present in their own way thanks to their energy and sound. Aside from Falco himself, whose inimitable voice cannot be missed in the songs, it is this approach that sets the album apart from a tribute album. "Dying to Live" is a collaborative album. It combines Falco's genius with the entire German rap generation, capturing the zeitgeist of 2018. Above all, the album provides plenty of topics to talk about. The video for Falco and Ali As' first single "Jeanny" has not only garnered half a million clicks on YouTube in five days, but also more than 1,000 written comments. Falco would surely be pleased, as the Austrian has always enjoyed elegance. Or as he put it: "I never want people to say, 'Who is that?' I always want them to say, 'What is he doing? What is he doing? Oh, interesting, scandalous, headline!" But other remakes of Falco's classic works are also polarizing. Haze, the head-nodding specialist from Karlsruhe, gives "No Time For Revolution" a brisk old-school makeover, rapping to the hard guitar riffs of the original and a thumping '90s beat loop. "I didn't think Falco's music had that sound," Haze says. Sun Diego, on the other hand, proves that it can go the other way, too. The SpongeBozz rapper, who not only leads the current streaming charts but also recently stormed the bestseller lists with his biography, turns "Amadeus" into a true Afrotrap anthem with a guaranteed hit. In the song "Zuviel Hitze" (Too Much Heat), Kontra K and Falco duet from a feverish yet frosty city with all its dangers. The song shows how Falco's music is still relevant 20 years after his death. "Falco was the first rapper in Germany and he's still the most successful! An icon, an example and unfortunately a sad fate. But legends die young," Kontra K emphasizes the importance that Falco still has for the German rap scene. Sido knows this too, and in "Der Kommissar", arguably the first commercial rap track by a white man, he brings a contemporary trap update with an extremely surprising new lyric. "What always fascinated me about Falco was that he never hid his weaknesses, but worked them out in his songs. That to me is the mark of a true artist!" Each of the songs on "12 + x" shows: 'Dying to Live' is not a cover album. Pop artists would probably simply take Falco's lyrics and cover them - but "each of the rappers on this production made Falco's songs their own: with great spirit and special lyrics," describes Robert Ponger, Falco's songwriter and producer since the early 1980s. "Something entirely new was created - an album that, 20 years after Falco's death, continues his uncompromising life's work.
