Tin Machine

Tin Machine

British rock supergroup

Tin Machine was a rock band formed in 1988, primarily known for being fronted by the legendary musician David Bowie. The group was a departure from Bowie's solo career, with the intention of creating a more democratic and collaborative band dynamic. Alongside Bowie, who contributed vocals and guitar, the band consisted of Reeves Gabrels on lead guitar, Tony Sales on bass, and Hunt Sales on drums; the Sales brothers had previously worked with Bowie on his 1977 album "Iggy Pop's Lust for Life." Tin Machine released their self-titled debut album "Tin Machine" in 1989, which marked a shift towards a harder-edged sound compared to Bowie's prior work. The band's music was influenced by contemporary alternative rock and aimed to return to the basics of rock music. They followed up with "Tin Machine II" in 1991, which continued in a similar musical vein. Despite mixed critical reception and modest commercial success, Tin Machine was an important phase in Bowie's career as it allowed him to rejuvenate creatively and experiment with a band format. The group disbanded in 1992 after their live album "Tin Machine Live: Oy Vey, Baby" failed to chart.
