Selim Palmgren

Selim Palmgren

Finnish Composer and Pianist

Selim Palmgren (1878–1951) was a Finnish composer, pianist, and conductor, often referred to as the "Chopin of the North." He was a prolific composer with over 300 compositions to his name, including five piano concertos, a large number of piano pieces, choral works, and songs. Palmgren studied at the Helsinki Music Institute and later in Berlin with Ferruccio Busoni, who had a significant influence on his style. His music is characterized by a romantic lyricism with nationalistic elements, reflecting the Finnish landscape and folk melodies.
