Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber (1644–1704) was a Bohemian-Austrian composer and violinist during the Baroque period. He is best known for his violin works, which include the "Mystery Sonatas" (or "Rosary Sonatas") and his contributions to the development of the technique of scordatura, a tuning system that alters the normal tuning of a string instrument. Biber's compositions are celebrated for their complexity, virtuosity, and inventiveness. He served as Kapellmeister at the court of the Archbishop of Salzburg, a position that later would be held by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Biber's influence was significant in his time, and his music has gained renewed interest and admiration in the modern era with the revival of Baroque performance practices.
