Johann Gottfried Walther

Johann Gottfried Walther

Baroque German Composer and Organist

Johann Gottfried Walther (1684–1748) was a German composer, organist, and music theorist of the Baroque era. A cousin of Johann Sebastian Bach, Walther is best known for his contributions to the development of the chorale prelude and fugue. He held the position of organist at the Stadtkirche in Weimar where he also worked alongside Bach for a time. Walther's musical legacy includes a substantial number of organ compositions, which showcase his skill and understanding of organ music's potential. His "Musicalisches Lexicon," published in 1732, is considered one of the first music encyclopedias and reflects his extensive knowledge of music theory and history. While specific albums such as "Orgelmusik In Der Wallfahrtskirche Steinhausen," "Organ Works Volume 1," or "The Bach Circle" may not be directly attributed to him due to their release long after his death, modern recordings often feature his works and highlight his influence on the repertoire of Baroque organ music.
