George Butterworth

George Butterworth

English Classical Composer and Folk Music Collector

George Butterworth was an English composer and folk song collector who made significant contributions to the musical landscape of the early 20th century before his untimely death during World War I. Born on July 12, 1885, in London, Butterworth was associated with the English pastoral school of composers and is best known for his settings of A.E. Housman's poems from "A Shropshire Lad." His work in collecting and preserving English folk songs also had a profound impact on the revival of interest in traditional English music.
