Founded in 1944 by the legendary Estonian choral conductor Gustav Ernesaks, the choir has since become one of the most prominent all-male choral ensembles in the world. The choir's repertoire ranges from Gregorian chant and baroque to contemporary compositions, with a special focus on Estonian composers' works. Throughout its history, the Estonian National Male Choir has won numerous awards and accolades, including a Grammy Award for Best Choral Performance in 2004 for their recording of Sibelius' "Cantatas."
