At the turn of the 1970s and 1980s, few musical genres divided the musical nation as much as the Neue Deutsche Welle. For some, it was too weird or crazy; for others, it was the dawn of new musical shores, a revitalizing aspect in a declining musical landscape, and an influx of energy for the entire industry. Despite the stylistic diversity and creative output, the mass phenomenon of "NDW" disintegrated rather quickly - but the "Neue Deutsche Welle" grew into an independent scene that still holds its own more than 30 years later. And in any case, the "Neue Deutsche Welle" was "the only significant event in German popular music since the Second World War" (Thomas Schwebel / Fehlfarben). The Neue Deutsche Welle produced terrible songs that were extremely serious, terribly trivial songs that were not so serious, extremely good songs that should have been, and songs that have stood the test of time and are now considered true classics. BEAR FAMILY's series "Aus grauer Städte Mauern" (From the Walls of Grey Cities) presents the musical diversity of the years 1977 to 1985 - the brief world between awakening, art music and industrial mass production - as comprehensively as possible for the first time. On this 2CD you will find now legendary hits by Nina Hagen, Fehlfarben, Trio, Nena and Joachim Witt, as well as rarities from the experimental punk scene and curious finds from basement studios and self-release shops. Many aspects of this panopticon of "new German dance music" paved the way for artists like Herbert Grönemeyer, Die Toten Hosen or Die Ärzte and later influenced German-language hip hop, techno or musical movements like the "Hamburger Schule". Each volume contains a 152-page booklet with detailed information about each song and countless period documents: advertisements, posters, fanzines, concert photos and record sleeves. Part Four also shows the interrelationships between the musicians in a ten-page index of the artists and songs in this edition, concluding the documentation, which totals 600 pages. Indeed: 'Hear, marvel, be of good cheer!' The review "The 150-page booklet again offers a wealth of information, and in addition to the bands and songs, it includes album covers, posters and photos from the concerts."
