Product Information The Mainstream family of labels was the main source of black music in the early 1970s. Owner Bob Shad was primarily a jazz producer, but he had enough sense and understanding of soul music to keep up with current trends. His own arrangers included veteran Bert DeCoteaux, fellow jazz musician Wade Marcus and up-and-comer Patrick Adams. Adams' production of Chapter Three's "I'll Never Be The Same" is soulful with an early disco beat; the uptempo "You've Got A Lot To Give" by Chocolate Syrup has a similar feel. Mainstream had some great groups with harmony vocals - Special Delivery, The Steptones and Eleventh Commandment contributed excellent examples of the genre. The rarely seen or heard flip of Almet Lattimore's 'These Memories' album, 'Oh My Love', sounds just as captivating and is one of several great Detroit productions co-opted into Mainstream. Others include the very soulful 'I'll Never Trust Love Again' by McArthur, 'The Grass Ain't Greener' by Charles Beverly and 'Your Love Is Like The Rising Sun' by the Steptones. Charles Colbert is an enigmatic artist whose mainstream cassette 'Slow Down World' makes its debut here. Billy 'Sugar Billy' Garner is the hero of our BGP label, having recorded for our Fast Track subsidiary four years after his New Day record 'I Got Some'. Shad has clearly taken a liking to southern soul and has licensed tracks from Lee Bates, Lenny McDaniel and Randolph Brown; he's even released a southern ballad from Count Willie & The Dukes. The jazz influence can be felt especially from singers Ellerine Harding, Neah Johnson, and Alice Clark - all of whom benefited from the Mainstream's jazz traces. Jeany Reynolds made an impressive debut on Mainstream with big band backed vocals a few years before her disco hits as Jeannie, while New York ballad veteran Lenny Welch offers the neglected "When There's No Such Thing As Love (It's Over)". These twenty-plus tracks maintain Mainstream's quality '70s soul reputation. Compilation and liner notes by Ady Croasdell.
