Mac Rebennack, who rose to fame under the pseudonym Dr. John, became a respected songwriter and accomplished keyboardist and guitarist at a young age. He played with bands in his hometown of New Orleans, cooking up a gumbo of rhythm & blues, boogie and rock & roll, spiced with horn playing and Creole flavor. His work was heavily influenced by pianist and composer Professor Longhair, considered a pioneer of the New Orleans R&B style. This special CD features 30 studio tracks, including a wide selection of overlooked quintuplets and seminal works that Mac Rebennack created as a composer, producer, arranger and performer for various local labels between 1958 and 1962. While he released some pieces under his own name, for others he used pseudonyms such as Little Mac or Drits & Dravy. Some of the songs were recorded by Big Boy Myles, The Ends, Sugar Boy Crawford, Chuck Carbo and Ronnie Barron, among others. These early works form the cornerstones of Mac Rebennack's unparalleled musical legacy.
