Disguised as Arabs, they visited record shops and concert halls. Three sessions were held in Baghdad, resulting in more than a thousand recordings. In Baghdad, shellacs sold like hot cakes. "Give Me Love - Songs Of The Brokenhearted - Baghdad, 1925-29" is the title of the second volume of the series featuring recordings from the famous EMI archive in Hayes. It provides a sense of the social life of a city where traditions, ethnicities and religions come together in a dazzling mix. We hear Arabic folk singers, singing prostitutes, songs from Bahrain and Kuwait, Kurdish violin improvisations and a Hebrew hymn that begins with a heartfelt "Allah!". And some of them even sound like a mix of John Coltrane and Sun Ra. All of the recordings have been remastered at Abbey Road Studios and come with English translations, rare photographs and sleeve notes.
