When Toto returned with their second album "Hydra", originally released in 1979, fans and critics alike were confronted with a body of work that, while instantly recognizable, was much more advanced and complex. Instead of serving up another serving of stylish pop-rock, they dug deep within themselves and devoted themselves to elaborate compositions and complex arrangements. In many ways, this approach can be directly traced to the progressive rock that the band has always hinted at with their musicianship and skill. "Hydra" is arguably Toto's finest hour. It's an album that combines all the positive aspects of a band that not only wrote great songs, but presented them in a form that isn't clichéd or boring. The title track, for example, is a seven-minute anthem that has become a career cornerstone, while shorter, edgier songs like "White Sister" and "All Us Boys" spectacularly strengthen the backbone of AOR.
