Although some critics considered Coltrane's Ballads too light, there is nothing wrong with this album. On Ballads, he highlights his softer side - the path he took with Johnny Hartman and Duke Ellington. This collaboration with McCoy Tyner is neither combative nor outwardly focused. Coltrane is completely himself, sometimes predictable, and yet these are the album's strengths.
