Their first studio album "The Grateful Dead" was released in 1967. Four years later, in 1971, the band released a live album with the same title "The Grateful Dead". To avoid confusion, fans therefore nicknamed it "Skull & Roses" - referring to the highly symbolic cover art. To mark the 50th anniversary, a double LP reissue and a new expanded edition on double CD will be released in 2021. "Skull & Roses" was the Grateful Dead's second live album after 1969's "Live/Dead". The album was certified gold by the RIAA and remained the band's best-selling album until the release of the compilation "Skeletons From The Closet" in 1974. It also reached number 25 on the US charts. The album's eleven tracks were recorded at seven different concerts the band played in the spring of 1971. In addition to Garcia, the band included Bob Weir, Ron McKernan, Phil Lesh and Bill Kreutzmann. Drummer Mickey Hart had left the band shortly before. David Hassinger, who had already been involved in the album "Anthem Of The Sun" (1968), was in charge of the production. Unlike its predecessor, "Skull & Roses" contains more new, original songs, but also several cover versions, including "Johnny B. Goode" by Chuck Berry and "Me & Bobby McGee" by Kris Kristofferson. In addition to the original album, remastered from analog master tapes, CD 2 features previously unreleased footage of the July 2, 1971 concert at San Francisco's famed Fillmore West.
