Originally released on May 18, 2010, "Brothers" was recorded mostly at the famous Muscle Shoals Sound studio in Alabama. It was a career breakthrough for The Black Keys, earning critical praise and three Grammy Awards for Best Alternative Album, Best Rock Performance and Best Recording for the Michael Carney-designed album. After the album's release, Rolling Stone magazine called them "a masterpiece" and Uncut magazine called them "one of the best rock and roll bands in the world". Although upon arriving in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, in a hot and humid August, they found that the studio had seen better days, the band - singer and guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney - brought their own equipment and carried on. Alabama's oppressive summer weather "forced us into the studio," Carney says. "We went into that darkness and stayed there." The duo recorded nine original Brothers songs in "a remote setting in a rundown historic space," Auerbach recalls, adding that the location nonetheless contributed to the Brothers' mood: "Half the things we love are in our minds, but when we go into these sanctuaries, it gives us an inner strength. It's a magical feeling - this is where the music was born."
