In the fall of 1961, cousins Brian Wilson and Mike Love composed a song about surfing, which they christened "Surfin'" at the intercession of Brian's younger brother Dennis Wilson. With Wilson's youngest brother Carl on guitar and Brian's high school friend Al Jardine on rhythm guitar, they formed a band. Brian played bass, Dennis played drums, and Mike was the frontman while they all sang vocal harmonies together, arranged by Brian. The song "Surfin'", released in December of that year, produced by Hite Morgan and featuring the song "Luau" on the B-side, reached the Top 75 of the US charts in the spring of 1962. Father Murry Wilson became the group's manager. The BEACH BOYS signed with Capitol and by June 1962, another single "Surfin' Safari" was released with the song "409" on the B-side. Both "Surfin' Safari" and "409" became hits, so Capitol Records released a complete album. The main part of the songs were composed by Brian Wilson, who regularly collaborated with Mike Love and Gary Usher. Officially, Nick Venet is listed as producer, although it is reported that at least Brian Wilson was involved in production. The second single "Ten Little Indians" was less successful and only reached number 49 in the chart, with Brian Wilson being of the opinion from the start that "Chug-A-Lug" would have been a better choice. Although Mike and Brian are the featured singers, Dennis contributes vocals for the first time on "Little Girl (You're My Miss America)", which is listed as "Miss America" on the cover. This set collects on two CDs the very first BEACH BOYS album, along with the recordings and sessions that led up to it - with tracks from Randy's original seven-inch released as KENNY & THE CADETS. Digipak including previously unpublished photos and notes by Dick Porter.
