Unpublished studio recordings from 1986. The smouldering sounds of Sonic Youth's 1986 rehearsals for the soundtrack to Ken Friedman's haunting road movie Made In USA are another milestone in the band's long and varied history. Now released as Spinhead Sessions (named after SST's home studio in North Hollywood, where bands like Black Flag and Painted Willie recorded). These test recordings were later expanded and heavily reworked for the full soundtrack production, but rough sketches show the band exploring truly new and introspective soundscapes. It was a whole new approach for Sonic Youth, a big challenge under the guidance of the big Hollywood moguls that opened the way for them into the soundtrack business. It's no secret that 1986 was in many ways a transformative year for Sonic Youth. The move to SST and the arrival of Steve Shelley on drums certainly gave the band a new vigour and expression. Friedman's film dealt with a rather dark subject matter for mainstream Hollywood; the main characters, played by Chris Penn and Adrian Pasdar, embark on a cross-country journey that begins in Centralia, Pennsylvania, an actual coal-mining town where all the residents have had to relocate due to a decades-long and unquenchable underground fire. But Sonic Youth's new record once again presents the band in a raw and compelling state of discovery in a great time. - Brian Turner, WFMU Music Director.
