Dirty is the seventh studio album by American alternative rock band Sonic Youth , released on September 22, 1992 by DGC Records. The album was produced by Butch Vig and recorded from January to May 1992 at Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin. It was the first album the band released on DGC after their departure from SST Records. Dirty was well received by music critics, who praised its abrasive and eclectic nature. The album reached number six on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
