Saxon's "Innocence Is No Excuse" is a breakthrough album in the band's career. It was the first album to feature new singer Biff Byford after the departure of original singer Graham Oliver and bassist Steve Dawson, and the first album to feature new guitarist Paul Quinn and drummer Nigel Glockler. It was also the band's first album to be produced by Kevin Shirley. The album was a critical and commercial success, reaching number 12 in the UK Albums Chart. The album's lead single, "Back in '79", reached number 38 on the UK Singles Chart. Critics praised the album for its heavy metal sound and many heavy metal bands cited it as an influence.
