And indeed, on tracks like "Samba De Sausalito" and "Yours Is The Light," the players shake a rich dose of familiar Latin feel from the instrumentation. Thankfully, however, the concessions don't go so far as to ingratiate themselves once again with die-hard Santanistas, such as in the form of the rhythmically well-trained "Caravanserai". Rather, they dare to do a lot of new things. Buoyed by the success of Miles Davis' disruptive fusion sound and his stream of inspired disciples, Santana combines his virtuosic guitar artistry with choice electronic elements. Jazz vocal acrobats Leon Thomas and Wendy Haas contribute their elaborate parts, and the master also engages in an emotional string duel with John Mc Laughlin on "Flame Sky."
