Teutonic thrash veterans Protector have delivered a classic hat trick with their new album. After a successful return to top form with an almost completely different line-up on "Reanimated Homunculus" and its successor "Cursed and Coronated", Martin Missy and his minions hit the mark again: "Summon the Hordes" is the epitome of consolidation and rejuvenation in equal measure. It was logical for the frontman to involve even more of his younger bandmates in the project, "because they have become an integral part of the band since 2011 and understand what makes good '80s-style thrash." Still, while "Summon the Hordes" is reminiscent of that pivotal decade, Protector wouldn't be themselves if they didn't bring something special to it and improve the way they work. The most striking feature is the production, which was handled by the legendary Harris Johns. "By 1991, I was no longer a member of the band," Missy recalls. "Olly Wiebel sang on the song ''A Shedding of Skin'' when Protector was working with Harris. I met him in 2013 at one of our concerts in Berlin and I've wanted to go into the studio with him ever since. Five years later, it happened and it couldn't have been easier and more relaxed." "Summon the Hordes' playing is anything but relaxed though. From the semi-groovy "Three Legions" to the frantic "'Meaningless Eradication" to the literally massive "Two Ton Behemoth" and "The Celtic Hammer," a tribute to the artistry of Tom G. Warrior, the record should be a surefire hit with several generations of fans.
