The Pixies are one of the most influential American bands of the late 1980s. In 1990 and 1991, the last two albums of the Boston band were released, "Bossanova" and "Trompe Le Monde". After the surf-pop of "Bossanova", Black Francis and Kim Deal showed their gritty, rock side from the early years again a year later on "Trompe Le Monde". A cover version of "Head On," originally by The Jesus and Mary Chain, was released as the album's lead single. Trompe Le Monde ended a golden streak of milestones - a mini-album followed by four albums released in quick succession - that cemented the Pixies as one of the best bands of their generation. Translated from the French, Trompe Le Monde means "to deceive the world" and shows that the band is still relentlessly pushing their sound. Recorded between Burbank, Paris and London, again with producer Gil Norton, their fourth album is arguably their most playful. Black Francis' lyrics about UFOs and conspiracy theories are still strange, while power pop creeps in to enhance the space rock that appeared on Bossanova's previous album. Featuring singles "Planet of Sound," "Alec Eiffel," "Letter to Memphis" and a perfect cover of The Jesus and Mary Chain's "Head On," Trompe Le Monde offers 15 tracks at full throttle in a quick 40-minute salvo. The album was critically acclaimed at the time and supported by a major tour that saw them play stadiums with U2, among others, but it also marked the end of the first act for the band as it took over a decade for them to return to shared stages. Trompe Le Monde is a brilliant record that still sounds as fresh after 30 years. Pitchfork retrospectively rated it a 9.3, calling it "more aggressive than anything else in their catalog, but also more confident. They can and will handle it now."
