Pantera's legacy as a nine-track essence! With the album Cowboys From Hell (1990) Pantera sparked an explosion that would fundamentally change the metal scene in the 1990s: Ultra-hard songs with an equally ultra-hard sound, hurtling into the metal crowd at high speed. In the following ten years, the genre's big winners were thus defined: with four platinum albums and a number one spot on the Billboard charts for Far Beyond Driven, Pantera became the metal phenomenon of the decade. Pantera got together as early as 1981 in Fort Worth, Texas, under the name Panterawith Metal Magic, but it wasn't until Philip Anselmo joined Dimebag Darrell, Vinnie Paul and Rex Brown in 1987 that the elemental power of Pantera's distinctive sound came through in full force. The new line-up debuted in 1990 with Cowboys From Hell, an album that is now one of metal's greatest milestones. Released in 1992, The Vulgar Display Of Power went double platinum and stayed on the US charts for an incredible 79 weeks - longer than any other Pantera album - and reached number 69 in Germany. But it was 1994's Far Beyond Driven that was their biggest success. To this day, it may be the most extreme album ever to reach number one on the US Billboard album chart (D: #7). In 2003, the band's breakup was officially announced Pantera. Anselmo formed the hardcore combo Superjoint Ritual and Vinnie Paul and Dimebag Darrell formed Damageplan. However, all fans' hopes of ever reuniting were dashed when Dimebag Darrell was shot by a maniac during a Damageplan concert on December 8, 2004. The entire rock world mourned the great man with the guitar.
