Organic's tenth album back on vinyl Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, or OMD for short, were one of the most important bands of 80s new wave and synth-pop. However, the British band also released many other successful albums outside of the 80s. One of them is "Universal", which will be re-released on vinyl in 2021. "Universal" is OMD's tenth album. It was originally released on September 2, 1996 on Virgin Records. It was to be the last album before the band's hiatus of over a decade. The band recorded twelve songs for it at "The Townhouse" and "Metropolis" studios in London. The production was handled by singer, bassist and keyboardist Andy McCluskey along with Matthew Vaughan and David Nicholas. McCluskey opted for a more organic, acoustic sound on the song "Universal". He commented himself saying: "I'd given up on techno/house, it was like an old man dyeing his hair black: ridiculous. I decided to follow the current trend of more acoustic music and use real drums and bass." Previously, the OMD frontman had exchanged ideas with former Kraftwerk member Karl Bartos, who was also a fan of organic music. He co-wrote the song The Moon & The Sun with him. The singles Walking On The Milky Way, which reached the Top 20 of the UK charts, and the title track were released from the album "Universal". The album itself reached number 24 in the UK. Shortly after the album's release, McCluskey disbanded the group. This was due to the media backlash against OMD, who were now being labelled unfashionable due to their proliferation of indie rock and Britpop. In 2021, OMD fans can look forward to a reissue of "Universal" on black 180g vinyl. The album has not been available on vinyl since its release in 1996 and has been remastered for the reissue at the famous Abbey Road studios.
