Nina Simone was able to combine jazz and soul with as much fluidity as anyone, and it's just one of many examples of why she was so successful as a singer and pianist. Simone was a strong woman with a very developed personality. She avoided the term jazz and liked to refer to her music as "black classical music". Many also called her the "High Priestess of Soul".
