It Was Written is the second studio album by American rapper Nas , released on July 2, 1996 by Columbia Records. The album was produced by Nas , Dr. Dre, The Trackmasters and L.E.S. It was recorded in New York City and Hollywood, California. The album features guest appearances by AZ, Foxy Brown, Dr. Dre and Immature. The album was commercially successful and debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200. It was later certified quadruple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Upon its release, It Was Written received universally positive reviews from music critics.
