Alain, Al Jourgenson for short, founded Ministry in the early 80s as a synth-pop band that increasingly incorporated other influences and eventually became a strong industrial metal band with a wide variety of guitars that not only shaped the style but also found a growing audience. Albums like "The Land Of Rape And Honey" and "The Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste" provided the first definitions of this sound, but their 1992 fifth studio album "Psalm 69: The Way To Succeed And The Way To Suck Eggs" should still be considered Ministry's magnum opus. The title was inspired by cult author Aleister Crowley's "Book of Lies," particularly chapter 69. Notable is the virtuoso use of samples, both from films like "Apocalypse Now", "Blue Velvet" and "Exorcist III", and from political speeches by Joseph McCarthy and George W. Bush Sr. Even later, Jourgenson liked to take aim at the Republican administration. Another highlight of the album is a guest appearance by Gibby Haynes of the Butthole Surfers, who is the lead singer and writer of "Jesus Built My Hotrod". With the song "Psalm 69..." Ministry topped the German charts for the first time - and it won't be the last.
