1964, the first Berlin Jazz Days: the main event Friday 25 September: the last concert of the evening: Miles Davis. Columbia's European affiliate, CBS, logically released an LP with this legendary event. The new quintet, for the first time with Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone - and not yet as composer - captivated and provoked the audience in the Philharmonic from the first to the last second. The classics "Miles(tones)", "So What" and "Walkin'" were played at an incredibly fast tempo, the ballads were tender and dreamy. Such a mysterious mood was almost never again created at later concerts, thanks in part to the excellent acoustics of the Great Hall. Because there was also an audience backstage, Miles could not provocatively turn his back on anyone, so he simply squatted down among them. This did not prevent his solos from being lyrical and delicate, mostly in the most subtle nuances, audible at low volume in every corner. The rhythmic shaping of young drummer Anthony Williams gives them the necessary tension. Miles in top form, an enthusiastic audience, impressive venue acoustics, plus convincing recording technique and a superlarge pressing on virgin vinyl - what more could a jazz lover ask for? So the credit card is maxed out! This Speakers Corner production was produced 100% purely analogue using analogue tape and mastering.
