Few black metal bands have made headlines like Norwegian originators MAYHEM. First a suicide (former Dead singer) and a legendary story with pieces of skull as mail, then the murder of mastermind and scene great Euronym: a good but largely bland black metal band became a myth. But now the quartet of Hellhammer, Necrobutcher, Blasphemer and Maniac impressively show that their music makes them one of the standout black metal bands of the 90s. According to MAYHEM's philosophy, black metal is an absolutely nasty, bitter and dirty thing. Few bands are as brutal and evil as the bastard. And Maniac turns out to be one of the craziest screamers on the scene. Disgusting, vicious, full of gut-wrenching tension, mostly in high gear, with nitpickingly simplistic riffs and fat production, the northerners rip through the songs.
