Madonna has a long history of albums that have wowed fans and critics alike, but when she released RAY OF LIGHT in 1998, the most amazing thing was how much she had transformed musically. This wasn't always the case - the original recording of her seventh album was led by Babyface and Patrick Leonard - but after it became clear that Madonna wasn't satisfied with those efforts, she hired William Orbit, whose production practices resulted in an LP unlike anything she'd ever released before. And yes, we mean that in a positive way. Arguably the first album by a mainstream artist to embrace electronica, RAY OF LIGHT takes full advantage of technological advances in the recording studio, layering the sound with synths and samples. Even more impressively, Madonna's audiences have not resisted her decision to go in this distinctly different sonic direction: the number of countries where the album has topped the charts has been in double digits, and both the song "Frozen" and the album's title track have been top ten hits in the US and the UK, with the former even topping the UK singles chart. "Drowned World (Substitute for Love)", "The Power of Goodbye" and "Nothing Really Matters" also made the UK top 10, but that's logical considering how much Brits love electronic music. Review by H. Barske in Stereo 3/04: "This thing is amazing. Partly because 'Ray Of Light' is one of Madonna's best albums. And that's not primarily a credit to Ms. Ciccone's vocal abilities, but to British producer William Orbit, with whom she has created a very exciting, atmospherically dense and sonically extremely fascinating work. The production quality is superb, the noise in the grooves is minimal and the sharp dynamic jumps thrive perfectly on a medium as dated as vinyl." S. Glass in Rolling Stone 3/98: "Ray of Light illuminates the global crisis of the entertainment industry, illuminating the cult of stardom and many millions of households. The album is a catalyst and popularizer of many subgenres of electronic music that are known only by reputation. "Ray Of Light" is a testament to integration, even radiance."
