The man from Brooklyn has long since decisively expanded the vocabulary of rock 'n' roll - both as a member of The Velvet Underground and through his early solo albums, such as the '72 classic "Transformer." In the late '80s, however, his hit single "Walk On The Wild Side" again took some surprising turns. And it was only because Lou Reed finally titled his album simply "New York" when his hometown had served as his creative playground for so long. The nearly hour-long song cycle remains his best and most complete solo work to date - it's as personal as it is deep, biting as it is funny, and with new collaborators like guitarist Mike Rathke and bassist Rob Wassermann, unapologetically energetic. With "Dime Store Mystery," Reed also managed to pay tribute to his mentor Andy Warhol, who died in 1987. Songs For Drella" continues this theme. On this album, Reed reunited with John Cale for a spectacular collaboration, a good 20 years after Cale left the Velvet Underground. Musically restrained, and thus entirely focused on the story(s), the pair managed to create a detailed, moving portrait that goes far beyond Warhol's public image. 1992's "Magic And Loss" felt surprisingly less morbid, given that Lou Reed was dealing exclusively with illness and death on this album after losing two friends to cancer within a year. With "Set The Twilight Reeling" and songs like "Egg Cream," Reed returned to the fun of life and loud guitars before delving into the darker side of lust and love at the turn of the millennium on "Ecstasy" with songs like "Paronoia Key Of E," "Mad" and "White Prism." He also came up with the eighteen-minute throwback orgy "Like A Possum" - don't say Lou Reed has run out of surprises...
