Seeking, Finding: Leon Bridges' "Gold Diggers Sound" Leon Bridges is a seeker. Since his debut six years ago, the American singer-songwriter has gone searching for his musical identity several times and found few answers. "Gold Diggers Sound" is the latest. Bridges' story sounds a bit like something out of a movie. He first made his living as a dishwasher and tried to make a name for himself by performing at outdoor nights in his hometown of Fort Worth. At least he met the right people there, who recorded his first solo album with him, "Coming Home", which was heavily inspired by 50s and 60s soul and gospel and reached the Top 10 in the UK and the US. In 2018, he continued his successful history with his follow-up album "Good Thing", but with new musical tendencies. Moving away from soul and towards R'n'B, the deliberately raw sound of the first album gave way to modern production. Still, the retro feel of his music was not lost. Not even when he recorded the collaborative EP "Texas Sun" with psychedelic funk instrumental band Khruangbin in 2020, combining the styles of both artists. After two Grammy nominations and a performance in front of former US President Obama, Leon Bridges continues his journey, or rather his quest: with the album "Gold Diggers Sound" in 2021. The eleven new songs are the result of long nights in the eponymous studio in Los Angeles, California. The album is a celebration of Leon's experience of making music in the same space in East Hollywood where he lived and worked for two years. The collaboration between Leon as an artist and the space itself was so inspiring that he decided to name the album after the studio complex. He gave away what the "Gold-Diggers Sound" sounds like with the first single "Motorbike", a romantic but by no means cheesy R'n'B pop anthem, the perfect soundtrack for relaxed summer evenings. The record also features some top guests: one track features, among others, American hip hop jazz pianist Robert Glasper and American rapper, musician and singer Martin Terrace. PS: In addition to the standard CD and standard LP, "Gold-Diggers Sound" is also available in a limited Indie Store Edition with alternative packaging. Of course only while stocks last.
