In recent years, Lamar has been confirming his exceptionalism with a slew of albums, including the new one DAMN.If you don't mind losing, we can have a good argument: who is really rap's number one and what is the main factor? Juicy flow? Colourful, strong atmosphere-laden lyrics that engulf you? Punchlines that knock your teeth out and burn themselves into your memory like a brand? Social integrity and solidarity with the oppressed? Whatever your answer, you'd be hard-pressed to find a more complex rapper than Kendrick Lamar at the moment.Buoyed by the success of his mixtape Section.80 and debut album Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, Lamar fit the role of messiah for discriminated African-Americans on the two-year-old To Pimp a Butterfly. Although the album was not musically revolutionary, it resonated strongly with the black community and sparked a debate about the social relevance of hip hop. This can be well illustrated in the song Alright, which spontaneously became an anthem of the Black Lives Matter protests despite Lamar's only partial agreement with its activities.
