Bitter Tears is a concept album that Johnny Cash released in 1964. It is one of several Cash albums in the Americana genre. As the title suggests, the songs on the album focus entirely on the history and problems of Native Americans in the United States. And not without success: 'The Ballad of Ira Hayes', about the story of Ira Hayes, a young Marine from the Pima tribe, reached number 3 on the country charts. The album is a sensitive and clear-eyed look at the unfair treatment of American Indians. It's gritty and moving, his best Americana album of the 1960s.
