The "Man in Black," who died in 2003, was synonymous with country music for a good forty years. Johnny Cash is an unparalleled record breaker in country music. Since his recording debut in 1955, he has recorded more than 2,500 songs and had nearly 150 hits on the Billboard country charts, including 14 number one hits that spent a combined 68 weeks at the top of the charts. After a difficult childhood (he was already working in his father's cotton fields at the age of five), Johnny Cash, who was born on February 26, 1932, in Kingsland, Arkansas, joined the Air Force, where he spent three years of service in Germany in the Bavarian town of Landsberg am Lech, near Augsburg. It was also here that he wrote his first songs, which he submitted to legendary Elvis Presley discoverer Sam Phillips' Sun Records label in 1955. He wanted to start a career as a gospel singer, but Phillips turned him down, saying he should come back with something more commercial. Cash submitted the song "Hey Porter" and immediately landed a recording contract. Already his second single, "Folsom Prison Blues" had carried Johnny to the top of the country charts and brought him national popularity. The third single "I Walk The Line" also reached number one on the charts. One of Johnny Cash's best (and most successful) long plays is the 1968 recording "Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison," which he recorded before an audience of 2,000 inmates and their guards at the infamous California prison.
