John Lennon's fifth album, Walls and Bridges, was recorded during his famous "lost weekend" - a period of separation from Yoko Ono, when he was primarily an alcoholic in Los Angeles. After the first recordings and a dispute with producer Phil Spector, he moved back to New York to concentrate on the album. With the song "Whatever Gets You Thru' The Night", Lennon had the first hit of his solo career. "Going Down on Love," "Steel and Glass" and "No. 9 Dream" are highlights of the album. The album Walls and Bridges was released in the U.S. on September 26, 1974 and was John's second album to top the Billboard charts. The title refers to the walls that surround him and his loved ones, and the bridges he burned and rebuilt. The album includes the song "Whatever Gets You Through the Night", which Lennon recorded with Elton John and which became his first solo single to top the Billboard Hot 100. The song, of course, helped "Walls and Bridges" reach number one.
